Every technical publication that I have ever seen that included presentation of mathematical equations always has the equation numbers placed to the right of the equation, with the number aligned with the right margin of the document. equation numbers) for mathematical expressions inserted into the document only offers the option to place the caption above or below the equation.

For example, the option to add equation captions (i.e. The conventions for formatting academic/technical writing are not so obscure that I am trying to perform some sort of weird formatting that nobody else ever uses. These formatting options should be more obviously under the end user's control and I shouldn't have to try and fend off the word processor trying to force my document to conform with the 'Redmond style' of formatting documents! It should be more obvious where user-entered customizations, like Autocorrect entries, are stored so that they can easily be restored in the event of needing to restore a system or move to another piece of hardware.

Neither should I have to take a class in how to perform technical writing on Word, in advance of performing my writing. Attempting to perform technical writing on a word processor shouldn't be this difficult! I shouldn't have to 'hack' the program to get it to allow me to format my writing to conform with my institution's document formatting requirements for a dissertation. In the short term, I have switched off automatic updates until I complete this dissertation because I cannot continue to potentially have Word unravelling my work behind my back in the interests of keeping me 'safe'. My working theories to explain Autocorrect's behavior are that either my changing document templates didn't carry over the new Autocorrect entries, or these entries are hidden somewhere else within Word and when the program updates itself, it wipes out these user customizations. Other pieces of relevant information for this question are that I had Automatic Updates for Office 365 switched on, and my Office 365 subscription just recently renewed. I have guessed this explanation because I have been working with style templates for my writing and have made more than on version of my dissertation body text template as I add various options for formatting section headings, figures, tables, and equation numbering as I see various 'hacks' for performing academic writing on YouTube.

My question is, where does word store these Autocorrect entries? Are they stored in the document or in the document template? The only explanation for the behavior that I observed might be that the Autocorrect entries might be stored in the document template. I looked in the Autocorrect entries table and all of my custom formatted entries are missing! Now, one week later, I try using Autocorrect to insert these formatted formulae and it doesn't work. I saved a document list with all of my formatted formulae entries because based on past experience, I don't trust the stability of Word. I tested these additions in a blank document and Autocorrect appeared to be making appropriate substitutions. Specifically I was entering formatted chemical formulae, with various subscripted and superscripted characters.

Very recently, I added a set of commonly encountered (in my writing) chemical formulae, complete with formatting, to the Autocorrect table.
